Women's Health Advice Centre

Women's Health Advice Centre

1 Council Road, Ashington, Northumberland, NE63 8RZ

Provide services to improve women's physical, mental, social health & well being.

WHAC was set up in 1984 with an aim to support women and girls 14+, encouraging them to take responsibility for their own physical, emotional and social well being. Women can access free confidential counselling, personal development, education and support on a variety of issues which can include: rape & sexual assault, domestic violence, housing, bereavement all of which can affect mental health and well-being. Clients often present with several of these issues at any one time.
Why the community needs this charity

WHAC is based in one of the poorest areas in Northumberland and in the UK. Women reluctant to access statutory provision receive support for their mental and emotional distress helping them back into productive life, both economically and socially, which impacts on the whole family. Women who face many barriers are helped to access other services in the community. WHAC is also a key organisation in the network of provision for women in Northumberland.

Results and outcomes

In a recent evaluation service users reported that: The courses encouraged people to progress onto other productive activities. People felt in better health as a result of participating in the health related activities. Counselling has a positive impact on women and their families due to their improved mental health. WHAC's long term presence is a major benefit to clients, who feel secure in the the knowledge that they can come back for support in times of need.
