Life changing support for families at Basildon Women's Aid who have experienced domestic violence.

Basildon Women's Aid works with women and their children who have been the victims of domestic violence. BWA provides refuge accommodation at the main refuge with shared accommodation for twelve families; self-contained flats for sixteen families and an Outreach Centre offering advice, support and training for those living in the community.
Why the community needs this charity

BWA provides - Safe accommodation for 28 families who have experienced domestic violence. Support for women experiencing domestic violence in Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point & Rochford to enable them to live safely in their own homes. Outreach Centre in Basildon offering advice, support, training and education for women in the community who are living with domestic violence. Training facilities in our refuges and outreach centre. 24 hour helpline.

Results and outcomes

The refuge provides a safe haven for families who have had to leave their homes, friends and possessions. Whilst resident staff work with women on isses of self-esteem and build confidence enabling healthy life choices to be made when moving on with their lives. When funded children have a daily creche for under 5s; after school and holiday activities and therapeutic groups to help them deal with the events they have experienced.Specialist counselling is also offered to those who need it.

Latest activities and projects

Children's After School Club

An afternoon club offering different activities each day such as Arts & Crafts, Art Therapy, Counselling groups, Drama & Dance sessions, fun outings such as cinema or bowling. During school holidays special family days out are organised such as a zoo, seaside or park trip. Many of our resident children have not been able to enjoy the activities that many families take for granted, our specialist staff ensure that the children have the opportunity to experience the fun whilst healing the hurt. read more

Volunteers Required

Basildon Women's Aid (BWA) is grateful for support of volunteers with various skills. We have volunteer Trustees for the Trustee Board; volunteer Counsellors for work with women and children; volunteers able to help with admin & household duties; painting, decorating gardening and repair work. All our volunteers have to undergo CRB checks due to the nature of the work with vulnerable women and children.
