The Clock Tower Sanctuary - Supporting Young Homeless People in Brighton and Hove.

The Sanctuary provides crisis support to young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25 and move-on support to help them make progress towards independent living. Our crisis support includes access to a safe space, hot food, telephone and the internet, somewhere to wash, storage for personal effects and a small Crisis Fund. We also offer case-work support, creative and skills building workshops and outdoor activities to help young people gain the confidence to move onto independent living
Why the community needs this charity

Young people are often among the worst affected by homelessness and this is especially true in Brighton and Hove. Our clients come from a variety of backgrounds; some have grown up in care, while others have left the armed forces or been released from youth offending institutions. Almost all our clients have had troubled early lives and for most, relationships with family have broken down, often irrevocably. When they come to us, they are often extremely vulnerable and in crisis.

Results and outcomes

Over 200 young people were supported by the Sanctuary in 2010. With rising numbers of service users throughout last year, we anticipate that demand for our service will rise further in 2011. We help the young people who come to us to stay safe, understand and act on their statutory rights and entitlements, and to survive periods of acute crisis by providing practical information, alongside compassionate support and advice that will help them to get their lives back on track.

Volunteers Required

We're always looking to recruit volunteers who have the skills to staff our frontline service or want to help out with our fundraising, communications and IT. As a volunteer you'll get thorough training, ongoing supervision, support and a sense of camaraderie from like-minded people, as well as experience that will enable you to go onto paid work in the sector. In return, we ask for a one day a week commitment over a period of six months. Check out our website for an application form.
