Emmaus provides homeless people with the opportunity to regain their lives and help others in need.

Emmaus provides home and work in a community setting for those who are without a home. Those who join us become "Companions" who use their skills within our social enterprise to earn a substantial part of our running costs. Our work is in reusing and recycling household items that people no longer need which are then resold to the public. Uniquely, we encourage our Companions to help other people who are more in need both in our local community and abroad.
Why the community needs this charity

Emmaus benefits the local community in the following ways: * By providing opportunities for homeless people in our city to regain their lives and help others. * By providing low cost furniture and household items through our 3 retail outlets in Bristol. * By helping others in our city who need support. * By enabling people to dispose of their unwanted houshold items and reduce landfill.

Results and outcomes

Since we started in 2003 we have helped hundreds of homeless people move forward in their lives. Those who have joined us have found friendship, gained work and become independent and been reunited with their families. Many have gained skills and qualifications and one young man is now at University. Two Companions now have management positions within Emmaus. We now earn half of our income through our social enterprise and prevent over 200 tonnes of household items going into landfill.
