The primary objective of Home Start-Butser is to help give children the best possible start in life.

Home-Start Butser is a voluntary organisation that recruits, trains and supervises volunteers who are matched to families needing support. Families with at least one child under 5 are visited weekly by their volunteer to help reduce isolation, develop confidence and self-esteem, increase access to local services and to maximise opportunities for parents and children. The families we support are often disadvantaged, depressed, lack motivation and suffer financial hardship.
Why the community needs this charity

Our support for vulnerable families ensures that social cohesion is improved and community links and networks encouraged. The trained volunteers reduce the isolation of families and ensure they are introduced to local support networks. As confidence increases the family is able to play its full part in its local neighbourhood, participating in local groups and activities.

Results and outcomes

When parents themselves are in need of support their children are also likely to be adversely affected. By building up their confidence and emotional wellbeing, parents are more able to cope with the difficulties they face, and give their children the time, attention and love they need. Improving family relationships through the support of volunteers will have positive outcomes for both parents and children and can assist in preventing family break-up with all its long term consequences.

Volunteers Required

We place experienced and trained volunteers with families in need who have at least one child under five years old. The volunteers visit the family regularly or two hours a week, often three or four, and help with the family’s health, education and financial needs including accessing services. They support parents to grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community.
