Lively local museum safeguarding the history and heritage of Kingsbridge and the South Hams

The Museum was set up 40 years ago to conserve the Grade II* listed Old Grammar School building, to collect, preserve and display artefacts and images of local interest, to document the history of the town and the area, to be a guardian of that history and to educate and inform the local population and visitors alike.
Why the community needs this charity

The search for historical context is an important part of local identity. We are the major source of historical data on the local area, which is available for research year-round in our Local Heritage Resource Centre. We take part in as many community events as possible to give them a historical dimension, and actively encourage visits from local schools and other groups.

Results and outcomes

This nationally important building has been preserved as part of the fabric of Kingsbridge, although we still need to ensure its sustainable future. Research undertaken at the Museum has provided inspiration for projects undertaken by local schools and students at Exeter University, who have collaborated with us in mounting exhibitions and exploring new technology to present their results.

Volunteers Required

Stewards to staff museum during summer season, half day per fortnight. Curatorial volunteers to document and care for museum collections, plan and mount displays, research local history, conserve machinery - half day a week or as much as you like. Volunteers for publicity, retail, events organisation and fundraising - if you have any experience with any of these and the time to spare, please contact us!
