Melbourne Area Transition is a group of residents in and around Melbourne, Derbyshire, who work together to make the area a more sturdy/resilient community in the face of the two massive challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change. Our diverse activities include energy auditing local houses, recycling schemes and encouraging local food production. We currently have two exciting projects underway - Whistlewood a community woodland and an educational schools garden . New Members most Welcome!
Why the community needs usMAT works with other groups to promote resilience against environmental, economic, energy and employment shocks that the twin threats of peak oil and climate change present locally. MAT has engaged with Melbourne Festival, Melbourne Carnival, The National Forest, Melbourne Parish Church, the Beavers, Melbourne Schools and Melbourne Civic Society to bring ambitious projects to fruition. We are currently working on our biggest project yet the purchase of land at Melbourne Common - Whistlewood.
Our impact on the communityMAT was instrumental in the installation of solar PV on the roof of Melbourne parish church, contributing to a reduction in the building's carbon footprint and its running costs. We run a solar buying group and a mobile phone and print cartridge recycling scheme. With Melbourne schools we created an educational food forest for children to learn about growing food. The National Forest Company have offered us a generous grant to purchase land on the Common for our latest project - Whistlewood.
Help needed for our Whistlewood project including fund-raising, admin, planning and business.
