Information for families & fun
By supporting Parenting Special Children you are helping families at the point of receiving a diagnosis of a disability for their child or young person. This is a very challenging time for families and there is little support available where families can feel heard and find out information about services that offer immediate support and ongoing support for the family. Many families feel isolated and do not know who to turn to. Our service is addressing that need by listening and signposting
"It helped to talk to someone who's been there, who is not a doctor or 'professional' to listen to you and understand some of what you're feeling" "I was able to talk to someone who was both understanding and knowledgeable" Families who have already accessed the service have told us that they feel less isolated. Some of them now attend support groups and have made return visits to the centre when a new issue has arisen.
In 2012 we are looking at developing an online support service.
We offer families the opportunity to talk in a relaxed setting with refreshments, childcare when needed and at a local location. Families are able to visit the service as many times as they need, giving them the chance to take time to navigate the new journey that they have embarked upon. We provide information to families about local and national organisations who can support the family. read more

The Diagnosis Support Service offers a weekly opportunity for parent/carers to come and talk to a trained peer supporter (a parent who has already been through the process of diagnosis) who will listen to them and provide information about local support services in the area that they live. All our peer supporters receive training before becoming a peer supporter. The Diagnosis Support Service operates in Reading, Newbury and Wokingham. We also offer families an online support service. read more
