Reusing unwanted paint, community arts, providing volunteering, training and support for local people
Seagulls is a Leeds based social enterprise aiming to protect the environment by saving unwanted/leftover paint from landfill, whilst offering tangible social benefits to the local community. We are a grass roots organisation with a strong, local focus on people and communities; creating benefits, opportunities and positive experiences for those who need them most.
Why the community needs usWhat we do and the way we do it means we achieve a lot of environmental and social results. We reuse over 115 tonnes of paint which would previously have gone to landfill each year; This paint has been made available to the people of Leeds, and targeted to benefit the homes of those in disadvantage and in poorer quality accommodation through our paint store and decorating service. In the last year we have had over 3000 customers through the door.
Our impact on the communityOur volunteer programme provides opportunities for local people. We work with between 15&20 volunteers yearly who receive training, work experience and support to improve life skills and employability. Historically we have worked with many marginalised people; young people without a support network, those experiencing mental health issues, learning disabilities and the long term unemployed. Our method of working has very much been to create a family atmosphere and a holistic approach to support.
We aim to provide a colourful, interesting and supportive environment for all who give their time to Seagulls. There is always a meal provided at lunchtime and we will reimburse any travelling expenses. Volunteering days are Monday to Friday 10am - 3pm There are various things you can get involved in at Seagulls: Paint mixing, collections, arts and crafts (mostly a summertime activity) painting and decorating, cooking lunch. We encourage the sharing of ideas and skills.
