[sonus] is the working title of Hampshire Deaf Association. The organisation was founded in 1879 and has been providing a variety of services to deaf people ever since. [sonus] exists to provide opportunties for Deaf, deafened, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people to have equal access to all sectors of the local communities. [sonus]also ensures that its services are developed in response to the views, ideas and opinions of Deaf, deafened, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people.
Why the community needs us[sonus] sevices include an interpreting and translation service, children and young people service, a residential home for deaf people and community support work to enable D/deaf people to live independently in the community, and our awareness and sign language training helps to breakdown communication barriers. We hold fundraising events and receive support from our volunteers and our local community.
Our impact on the community[sonus] supports the whole of the D/deaf community, from children to adults, their friends, family and carers. The results of this work enable D/deaf people to take their place as respected and confident members of the wider community, able to pursue opportunities, make informed choices and achieve their potential. As one parent says, "We have seen a more confident Son. He seems to accept his hearing problem better and he realises he is not alone."
