We are a not for profit organisation which exists to popularise chess amongst children aged 4 to 18.
Sussex Junior Chess (SJC) is a not for profit organisation which exists to promote and popularise chess amongst school age children in the county. We offer training days at venues around the county, and organise tournaments for individuals and schools. We also select and run county teams who compete in national and international events.
Why the community needs usChess is a long established community activity which promotes in children higher self-esteem, achievement, social skills and above all fun and friendship. Chess is a low-cost activity for families and we wish to popularise the virtues of chess to all members of the community, especially those on low incomes and whose children may be socially marginalised.
Our impact on the communityWe exist to enable children to move from being a complete beginner to being enthused with chess and looking to develop their interest. Chess helps develop powers of analysis, logic and reason, promotes self-esteem, as well as encouraging powers of concentration and self-discipline. It is well established that chess enhances academic development in many ways.
Sussex Junior Chess welcomes volunteers of all ages with different skill sets, i.e. chess knowledge, PR/Media, catering, IT support, audit, general skills, etc etc.If you wish to volunteer please email:info@sussexjuniorchess.org We will be pleased to hear from you!
