We work with people leaving prison; we help them to resettle and lead constructive lives.
Sussex Pathways helps people who are leaving prison to resettle successfully and lead constructive lives. We recruit, train and support volunteers to work as mentors with people leaving prison. The mentor and mentee work together, meeting once a week for eight weeks in prison. They meet at the gate on the day of release, and then they meet each week for the next six months in the community. The mentor supports and encourages the mentee to develop a resettlement plan, and to stick to it.
Why the community needs usSussex Pathways reduces crime, and reduces the number of victims of crime. Sussex Pathways supports people leaving prison to resettle successfully in our communities, and to lead constructive lives. Volunteers working with Sussex Pathways learn about the Criminal Justice System, they engage in improving the lives of people coming out of prison, and they reduce crime and the fear of crime.
Our impact on the communityOf the people who ask for a Sussex Pathways mentor, 70% expect to be homeless on release from prison, 90% have no job arranged, and 70% have problems with drugs or alcohol. A Sussex Pathways mentor can help them to secure housing; can help them to access support and treatment for drug and alcohol problems; can help them to get work. With this support, people leaving prison are much less likely to re-offend.
We recruit, train and support volunteers to work as mentors with people leaving prison. As a Volunteer Mentor, you will work with your mentee in prison for eight weeks, meet on the day of release at the gate, and work together in the community, meeting once a week for six months. Volunteer mentors need to commit about half a day per week for eight months.
