WISEArchive. Working lives of older people.
The Norfolk and Norwich area has very strong agricultural and manufacturing traditions. We give older people the opportunity to share their working life stories and ensure that their memories are preserved for future generations. Many older people now feel isolated from the changing society in which they live and value the opportunity to interact with younger people, especially schoolchildren. Families preserve lasting memories of their loved ones through these stories.
Our website contains an ever growing archive of working life stories which are preserved in the Norfolk County Archives. Our activities in schools, sheltered accommodation and residential homes have allowed older people to feel valued and the young to hear their stories. A contributor's family member comments:"It is a fascinating website and great memoir of our social history. It seems comforting to know that mum lives on through it. She was quite chuffed to think her story was on the internet."
We are looking for volunteer interviewers throughout the Norfolk area to visit people and collect their stories. We also need people to transcribe stories, help with fund-raising events and publicity, or organising WISEHUBs (local groups) around the county. [Volunteers involved in activities requiring contact with vulnerable people or children will be CRB checked.]
