Our Street Corner - a drop-in for youngsters from 8 to 18 years old, every Monday from 7 to 9 pm

With money we received from the Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF), we set up the Our Street Corner Project in July 2009. We appointed a Youth Leader who, through street work, met and identified a large group of young people in our village who needed support. A project to involve them in community work and opportunities to meet more adults face to face helped to make links between all groups. This was an extremely worthwhile time and paved the way to set up the idea of a drop-in for these young people
Why the community needs this charity

Young people need a place to meet where they can relax and meet their friends and adults who will support them and help them to plan for their future, as well as an opportunity to be a part of the community. Our youngsters have been encouraged to talk to villagers in the street, become more involved in village events and to take part in activities that benefit the village, such as cleaning the war memorial, which has now become an annual event.

Results and outcomes

The young people now feel part of the village community and have experienced respect from some of the villagers and the Parish Council after their contributions to the social structure of this community. They now talk to more adults when they meet them on the streets and know that the local church is also interested in their welfare, after money was raised and given to the club to support the funding of a part time youth worker.
