Older people over 65 make up over a quarter of the 800,000 population of Dorset. If current trends continue and forecasts prove correct, then by 2030 almost 40% of Dorset's residents will be of retirement age or above. This means that a growing number of residents will develop a long-term illness or disability including dementia. Older people need additional support to what is provided by statutory organisations.
Why the community needs usThe Neighbourhood Appeal will expand Dorset Community Foundation's support for older people to date and provide that additional help for them in the future. It is part of the Dorset Fund which supports issues affecting communities across Dorset. The Neighbourhood Appeal will raise awareness and donations to help with the following:loneliness and social isolation, supporting carers, lack of transport (particularly affecting those living in rural areas), poor mobility, mental and physical health.
Our impact on the communityWe love Dorset and believe that helping the most disadvantaged amongst us will strengthen local communities. Our mission is to raise money to help those most in need across Dorset. As older people make a large proportion of the local population we want to ensure that they get all the support they need. The Neighbourhood Appeal will be meeting the needs of older people today whilst creating a legacy to support those needs in the future.
