Somerset & Wessex Eating Disorders Association (SWEDA) helping people affected by an eating disorder
Full recovery from an Eating Disorder typically takes up to ten years and throughout that time sufferers, family and friends need constant information and support. It is this long-term support which SWEDA provides. The support mechanisms are very diverse, ranging from telephone help-line, message board on the website; mediated self-help support groups; advice with independent living; support through further or higher education, to regular Counselling sessions.
Why the community needs usSomerset is one of the few counties to have its own independent Eating Disorders charity, and our services are much appreciated by all those who make use it. It's difficult to assess the prevalence of Eating Disorders because those affected are often in denial about their condition, but a conservative estimate suggests that within Somerset at least 15,000 people are suffering from an Eating Disorder, and that their condition radically affects the lives of their families and frieds.
Our impact on the communityA users comment:
"Seeing SWEDA is one of the best things I have done towards my recovery. In the 12 months I've been using this service, I have received an incredible amount of support and understanding. I have and still continue to recommend this service to others. In coming here I no longer feel judged by my weight or as an appointment time, I am treated as an individual person. Being a part of SWEDA has helped me remove so many barriers, make friends and trust others. Thank you."
