To reduce the social isolation of deafened/ hard of hearing adults in the Andover area of Hampshire
Lipreading coupled with coping/managing strategies is one way to overcome social isolation. We believe lipreading is a vital life skill, and that tuition in lipreading, with coping and management strategies for day-to-day activities should be provided free of charge. Many people with deafness also have other health issues, and are often unable to fund these classes.
Why the community needs usDeafness is so debilitating, tiring and socially isolating. Hampshire County Council Adult Services Sensory Team, and audiologists at Andover and Winchester Hospitals encourage their clients/patients to attend our lipreading classes. They learn the theory and practice of lipreading and how to manage day-to-day activities. That benefits their families, friends and work colleagues, as well as developing their own self-confidence.
Our impact on the communityWe welcome any adults who suffer from deafness. Our classes have between 10 - 12 hard of hearing adults and we have fun while learning. Our evening class also teaches how to develop coping and communication skills for the work-place, thus helping deafened people to remain in work and improve their capabilities.
