The Friends of Lyme Regis Museum, established 45 years ago, is a vital support base for the museum.

Local Giving – Introduction

Our fundraising supports one of the best small museums in the country. Our museum is centrally located on the Jurassic World Heritage Coast and is built on the site of Mary Anning’s house. Mary Anning is now recognised as a brilliant palaeontologist who discovered and recognised the importance of fossilised remains of Jurassic sea life. The museum features geology and has an internationally important fossil collection but the arts and local history are also well represented.

Why the community needs us

The museum is very popular with local residents and tourists. There is a major emphasis on education particularly with children. The museum employs an Education Officer and receives around 2,000 visiting school children each year in addition to carrying out projects with local schools. Visiting school parties combine a fossil hunt on the beach with class work. The Friends organise a programme of lectures for local people in addition to fund raising activities.

Our impact on the community

The museum organises exhibitions and art-related activities. The Friends advertise their activities widely and give press releases to maintain interest within the community. The Friends produce two quality newsletters each year which are sent to our 500 members and interested local organisations. We believe that our activities encourage tourists to visit Lyme Regis which in turn brings economic benefits.
