Glenshane Care Ass. provides day opportunities for people with physical and/or learning disabilities
Our charity offers a range of activities covering a wide variety of interests in the context of individual programmes of care and personal development. The aim is to help disabled people gain a level of independence which will empower them to have more control over their lives. The project is not simply focused on service delivery, rather it is a participative model which actively involves disabled people, carers and volunteers. Disabled people are supported to take part at all stages.
Why the community needs usWe benefit the community by providing established services which make a measurable difference to the lives of disabled people. These services by extension, provide relief and respite for carers as well as reducing the isolation, stress and pressure many carers face but can do little to change. We provide a community anchor ensuring that people with disabilities have a strong and visable presence and a part to play in the life of the community from which we emerged.
Our impact on the communityBy bringing in tutors from our local Further Education College we provide classes in IT, Art + Crafts, Horticulture and Basic Cookery. These classes support our disabled members to acquire new skills which may help them find employment or voluntering work. For those members unable to work we provide sessions of Yoga/Relaxation, Beauty Therapy, Drama and Music and Dance. The aim is to improve quality of life through making the experience at the centre as enjoyable and productive as possible.
