We help children to develop their literacy and communication skills and reach their full potential.
We are a registered charity that enriches young people's lives by assisting with their literacy, communication and social skills. We work in partnership with schools by providing trained and supported Volunteers who make reading and communicating enjoyable to those at risk of disengaging from education. We also run workshops for parents/carers in order to develop their confidence and ability to help their children read at home.
Why the community needs usTo compete in the modern world we need a fully educated and trained workforce, early intervention is a cost effective method to achieve this and to prevent wasted potential. If one child disengages from their education there is a cost to them and society as a whole. Literate children who, in turn, become parents are able to assist their own children to read and communicate and thus prevent further "lost" generations.
Our impact on the communityEvery week, during term time, our Volunteers help some 1000 children in the city of Nottingham and the county of Nottinghamshire overcome the difficulties that they have with reading and communication and obtain these imperative life skills. To further our Mission we are continuing to run a series of Workshops for parents/careers to give them the confidence and knowledge to help their children read at home.
Volunteers are needed to help selected local primary school children develop their reading and communication skills. They do not teach reading but through the assistance they give, on a 1 to 1 basis, outside of the classroom environment, they are able to help children discover the enrichment of life that reading and communicating can bring. Ultimately this will greatly contribute to a child's on-going education and personal development.
