Oblong is a community organisation that provides advice, support and facilities for local people who want to make a difference through volunteering, community projects and access to community space.
Why the community needs usOblong is committed to supporting local people to access resources and develop skills to create an active, flourishing community. We aim to improve confidence, life skills and employment and training prospects through volunteering. We work with local community members to engage in local decision making and social action. We aim for Woodhouse Community Centre to be a hub for community activity.
Our impact on the communityIn 2011 we took over the management of Woodhouse Community Centre under a community asset transfer and completed a £0.5 million refurbishment, reopening in January 2012. In the last 3 years we have worked with over 200 volunteers. We have delivered a range of courses in Community Development, looking after your mental wellbeing, video, photography, IT and English for speakers of other languages. Produced a range of videos, web sites and print media for third sector and statutory organisations.
We are looking for volunteers to help run our community centre, providing reception, administration and visitor support as well as publicising the building. There are also opportunities for media production, ICT support and gardening. Contact volunteering@oblong.org.uk or call 0113 245 9610
