Passionate about raising young leaders through improving life skills, education and self-respect
We aim to develop, nurture and release the leadership potential of boys of African and Afro-Caribbean heritage, empowering them to become a new generation of business and community leaders. These are boys who show promise but who are not reaching their full potential, we strive to:
help boys to gain independence and motivation, introduce boys to wider opportunities, support boys to reach their academic best, strengthen social and communication skills and steer boys from crime and gang culture.
Why the community needs usLiving in Southwark and Lambeth, our boys often experience high deprivation, have few positive male role models, are at risk of involvement in anti social behaviour/activities and gang membership, have poor academic skills and are at risk of exclusion. By providing leadership and citizenship activities and working with schools we enable boys to make positive decisions, develop life and social skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem and support them to value their part in the community.
Our impact on the communityThe leadership programme teaches boys to take responsibility for their actions. Reports from parents and teachers show their behaviour and attitude improves. Education support on Saturdays and Tuesdays achieves a clear improvement in literacy/numeracy levels and understanding citizenship. The group reading project improves reading and a love of books. Progress in gaining social and practical skills is recorded in a Leaders' Journal as boys progress through Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
Tutors and mentors required to work daytime sessions in school supporting small groups of boys. Training will be given for this work. Teachers needed to help deliver help with numeracy and literacy support Saturday afternoon and two evenings a week.
