CoastNet promotes integrated coastal living and management combining environmental, social, economic and cultural considerations. We have four strands to our work: Communities, Policy, Governance and Knowledge. Under our community work we aim to relieve poverty and improve the conditions of life and wellbeing in socially and economically disadvantaged coastal communities. We also hope to build the capacity of local coastal communities to adapt to change and to take part in decision-making.
Why the community needs usWe tailor positive, coastal theme activities to suit the needs of children, young people and families in deprived areas of Plymouth and East Cornwall suffering from unemployment, low educational achievement, low aspiration and poor health. Activities include multi-media (film, photography and audio), after school and youth clubs, surfing, walking, rock pooling, beach trips, fishing, drama, music, dance, cookery, marine biology, history including oral history, exhibitions and events.
Our impact on the communityOur work improves the social and emotional skills of participants including their wellbeing, confidence, team-work and self-esteem. Participants have the opportunity to form friendships, have fun, access new places, learn new skills and sometimes gain qualifications in an informal, non-threatening environment.
We need volunteers to help out at youth and community events which often have a filming/photography element.
